Chopard cuts jobs as spending falls - newspaper report

March 17, 2009 - Swiss luxury group Chopard is shedding 36 jobs as shoppers cut spending on watches, a newspaper quoted the head of its watchmaking unit as saying.

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele told Swiss newspaper L'Agefi in an interview that Chopard is cutting 13 jobs at a manufacturing plant and 23 at its head office, out of a total 1,800 staff.

Scheufele said Chopard foresees lower orders at this year's Baselworld and expects fewer U.S. clients to visit the trade fair, which starts in late March.
