Damiani to open boutique on Bond Street soon

By James Clatford

BASEL, March 28, 2009 - Italian luxury jeweller Damiani plans to open a standalone boutique on Old Bond Street in London soon, marking a major step in its development as a global brand.

Giorgio Damiani, Vice President of the Damiani Group, told Jewellery Outlook that Damiani was pleased to have secured an excellent retail location in London to sell its upmarket jewellery range, after a thorough search.

"We have the space now. We need some time to refurbish the interior, and we will be opening on Bond Street soon," Giorgio Damiani said in an interview on the sidelines of a private showing of some of Damiani's most exquisite diamond jewellery, a short distance from the Baselworld trade fair.

"London is a global city, perhaps more so than Paris."

Damiani insiders say the company hopes to open the 11 Old Bond Street store in the elegant Mayfair district around the end of May 2009.

But the precise timing will depend on the progress of refurbishment.

The news is of importance to the global jewellery industry as it marks a vital step forward in the development of the Damiani brand globally.

Damiani will be just a short distance away from Italian brand Bulgari, which is located on New Bond Street.

Bond Street, where commercial rents are among the most expensive in the UK, is the premier location for fine jewellery retail sales in London - a global shopping hub.

Bond Street houses many of the world's best known jewellers.

They range from top international brands such as Cartier, Mikimoto and Boucheron, to the independent jewellers celebrated for their ability to source the very rarest of coloured diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies, such as Graff, Leviev, Moussaieff and Chatila.

Bond Street is a glamorous mixture of jewellers, elite fashion houses ranging from Alexander McQueen to Ralph Lauren, and high end art galleries.

Jewels fuse with fashion and art to create a sanctuary for beauty and lifestyle here.

Bond Street jewellers estimate that more than three-quarters of their jewellery sales are for export - spectacular and rare items sold to visitors from around the world.
