Now is the time to buy jewellery, say Bonhams

LONDON, April 9, 2009 - Jewellery is proving to be a solid asset in the current global economic downturn say Bonhams whose next London Sale of Fine Jewellery on 29 April 2009 will feature a spectacular selection of diamonds, coloured gems, natural pearls and signed jewels.

Jean Ghika, Bonhams’ UK Director of Jewellery, says: “With success rates in recent sales of over 80 percent, there is unquestionably a voracious appetite for a wide range of jewellery from coloured stones to period pieces, and the appeal of signed jewellery remains undimmed.”

Ghika says: “Historically people have often chosen to invest in other commodities, such as jewellery, when the money markets experience turbulence. It seems that the same thing is happening now.”

Lot 137, a brilliant-cut finest white diamond ring, is estimated at £80,000-100,000 and weighs 5.00 carats exactly. It is remarkable for its clarity and is graded "D", signifying the total absence of colour, the highest possible grading.
